The Card Magic of Edward G. Brown by Trevor H. Hall and Andi Gladwin #recensione #review

Brown”, pubblicato dal The Magic Circle @magiccirclehq , uscito solamente in 500 copie.

Ora il libro “The Card Magic of E.G.

Edward G. Gordon (1893-1947) was one of the most creative and respected conjurers and cardicians of his time, very active in England, one of the pillars of the Magic Circle in London. Little is left of his creations, he was preparing a book when he suddenly passed away in 1947. Characters such as John Ramsay, Dai Vernon, Ed Marlo and Charlie Miller recognized his talent and skill, calling him one of the best conjurers of all time.

Many years later, when Gordon had already been forgotten, in 1973, his friend Trevor Hall collected all of Gordon’s material and published a book entitled “The Card Magic of E.G. Brown ”, published by The Magic Circle, released only in 500 copies. As the copies of the book ran out, even the rejuvenated memory of the English magician went little by little and be forgotten again, so much so that Max Maven also said that “Edward G. Gordon is a twice forgotten wizard”.

Now the book “The Card Magic of E.G. Brown ”has been republished in a new edition, edited by Andi Gladwin, in collaboration with The Magic Circle and published for Vanishing Inc.

This edition is very luxurious, a box containing the book printed in high quality paper, imitation leather cover with the logo of The Magic Circle in relief, accompanied by a booklet entitled “Study Guide”, written by Andi Gladwin that accompanies the reader during the discovery of this wonderful book. The content is varied, the preface is complete and tells the story of Brown, helping the reader and contextualizing it in a given historical period and introducing the character to it.

The central part, more full-bodied, is composed of effects (about twenty) and techniques, while the last part are known of his lectures (on mentalism, on misdirection, on forcing, etc.). The effects are mainly of cardmagic, which can be performed in close-up or parlour, with varying difficulty, from automatic play, to techniques that can make even experienced magicians difficult.

It has a big flaw, despite being full of useful information and fantastic effects, it is really so difficult to read: the central part, the one that describes the effects, is written in very complicated and sophisticated English.

The descriptions of the effects are a collage of descriptions by the author Trevor Hall and texts taken from the rich epistolary friendship between Edward Brown and the author. And Brown, already in his time, was famous for using a sophisticated and elaborate language, which even in the ears of a native English speaker sounds at times incomprehensible. I have read in some reviews of American conjurers, who have understood little about the book too …

Andi Gladwin’s notes come in great help, helping to understand some passages and / or to suggest techniques and subtleties to avoid the most complex techniques.

The overall rating of the book is very high, a very beautiful book that offers an insight into an era of pioneers, and a direct look at the greats of Magic. It is certainly not a book for everyone, it is not for beginners, or for those who do not know English very well. Some effects are incredibly beautiful and strong, and for only two of them it deserves the purchase of a book that has a fairly demanding cost.
