PAUL HARRIS: DEEP CLEAR – Review by Biagio Fasano

Paul Harris is a sort of living legend for all conjurers: an innovator with a brilliant and creative mind, suffice it to say that he is the author of the 3 Volumes the Art of Astonishment which are considered inevitable in any self-respecting library.

Therefore, the expectations on this new release (also given the rarities of such an event in recent years) were very high. But let’s start by saying that this is not an entirely new effect, if anything of the evolution of two of its previously commercialized effects: Deep Astonishment (which can be found in its original form on page 23 of the Third Volume of the aforementioned masterpieces , under the name of “Anything Deck” and Deep Astonishment 2.

This last effect is further improved thanks to an idea of Ben Harris beautifully exploited in his “Solid Gold Easy Action”, still available today as an E-book for less than € 8 on Lybrary.com.

We thus arrive at Deep Clear: the idea remains that of having a spectator who chooses his own “magic word” composed of 3 to 5 letters and of the magician who, making it be pronounced aloud, first finds a card chosen by the same spectator, to then dramatically reveal that the cards contained in his prediction, kept in view from the start in a special wallet provided, show on the back just the letters of the chosen word! Please note immediately that, for both choices, no forcing is used: that of the card is free and, in the case of the word, in our case (but the effect works in all languages) it is preferable to ask the viewer, “to render the formula most powerful magic ”, which is composed of different letters.

By purchasing “Deep Clear” you will be provided with an elegant black box containing a special “Bicycle” deck and a special black (?) Leather wallet with its gimmick.

Both the special wallet and the gimmick are very well made and cared for. The cards instead require a preparation that, although very simple, will take you about a quarter of an hour, giving you some “artistic freedom” (you can alternatively use different decks, including the “Alpha Deck” of the Phoenix). A particular technical preparation is not required, but rather it is also suitable for beginners in card magic: I would say that it is sufficient to know how to handle a deck of cards in the basic version well and a minimum of card magic knowledge is required for the best version (you will soon understand what understand). There are no critical angles, in any case you will not have to have spectators behind you, and you need a table on which to place the cards and the wallet with the prediction.

The final revelation of the chosen word is very powerful, but always requires the preliminary execution of the “finding of the chosen card”. To be an effect of Paul Harris I must say that initially I was disappointed by the solution proposed in the first video downloadable from the Murphy’s Magic website: the initial discovery, as proposed in the video, reduced the effect, in my opinion, almost to a game from the living room and made the final revelation lose its bite, compromised by the “handling” previously requested.

Fortunately, Alakazam Magic has thought about it and the new videos that show and explain the solution adopted by Dave Loosley, bring it all to a very high level, as expected from Paul Harris.

In fact, Paul himself has appreciated and recognized the validity of the proposed solution, so much so that he now wants to include these videos in his downloads

Find the Dave Loosley performance, which I strongly recommend you see, at this address:

I therefore state that to date, by purchasing DEEP CLEAR, you will receive a code to download from the Murphy’s Magic website:

– 1 video of over 1.5Gb and lasting 35 minutes in which Shaun Jay will show you in detail the effect as originally thought and the use and preparation of the deck, the wallet and the gimmick.

– 2 videos of Alakazam Magic with performances, explanation and new handling of Dave, mentioned above

– 2 additional PDFs explaining the psychology of the “Wallet Steal” and an alternative solution:

– 2 Pdf with the ORIGINAL instructions of Deep Astonishment as it was written 20 years ago and some suggestions and additional ideas

Summing up, today I can say that I really like DEEP CLEAR, it is worth the $ 40 required, and I think it could enter the repertoire of many card magicians and maybe even mentalists.

In mine, of passionate, he entered by right!
